A GRASP ON DEATH
I play a few video games that require me to kill. Although these other soldiers of the other cause are virtual, if you get killed by them you can always spawn another life close to where you lost your previous one. Besides it being a stress reliever for me, it also got me thinking (which is dangerous, I know).
Death - some people flirt with it voluntarily, others involuntarily. In the real world, it takes a certain person with a certain personality to place himself at the edge of no return. It is one thing for your armed service to be forced (draft) or your will to be forced into action by defending yourself. For example, you may defend your country against a declared/undeclared enemy or a thief in your home. It is another thing to voluntarily sign-up for duty to serve and protect in any service that has the potential of you not returning home.
There was a time, when I was younger, that I could have seen myself in the shoes of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or local police. I think it was glamorized and honored in my life just enough to make me respect it and consider applying. I did look into the Navy. I think, if I remember correctly, they said "no" because I was too tall (interested in sub duty) and I had epilepsy. It was not meant to be.
Now, I hear stories from family and friends of wars past and present and wonder how I ever saw the allure of it all. Don't get me wrong, "I am a lover not a fighter" (nod to MJ), but I am no wimp either. I feel like I could do what was needed if the situation arose. But like I said, I am not going to go looking for it to prove anything or justify my existence.
Death is coming, why rush it? Well, somebody has got to serve and protect, right? Right. And I thank God for those He has wired with all the great ideas and means to execute the ideas. Such ideas as patriotism, family, freedom, and human rights are the springboard for action many times when considering serving in the military or police force, but it takes a person wired with A Grasp On Death to do the job.
"...man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,..." - Hebrews 9:27
